Global chemical weathering dominated by continental arcs since the mid-Palaeozoic

چکیده

Earth’s plate-tectonic activity regulates the carbon cycle and, hence, climate, via volcanic outgassing and silicate-rock weathering. Mountain building, arc–continent collisions clustering of continents in tropics have all been invoked as controlling weathering flux, with arcs also acting a major contributor dioxide to atmosphere. However, these processes largely considered isolation when reality they are tightly coupled. To properly account for interactions among processes, inherent multi-million-year time lags at play Earth system, we need characterize their complex interdependencies. Here analyse interdependencies over past 400 million years using Bayesian network identify primary relationships, drivers global chemical signal. We find that length continental arcs—the fastest-eroding surface features on Earth—exerts strongest control fluxes. propose rapid drawdown tied arc stabilizes temperatures geological time, contrary widely held view this stability is achieved mainly by delicate balance between seafloor interiors.

The Mg isotopic systematics of granitoids in continental arcs and implications for the role of chemical weathering in crust formation.

Continental crust is too Si-rich and Mg-poor to derive directly from mantle melting, which generates basaltic rather than felsic magmas. Converting basalt to more felsic compositions requires a second step involving Mg loss, which is thought to be dominated by internal igneous differentiation. However, igneous differentiation alone may not be able to generate granites, the most silicic endmembe...

Continental igneous rock composition: A major control of past global chemical weathering

The composition of igneous rocks in the continental crust has changed throughout Earth's history. However, the impact of these compositional variations on chemical weathering, and by extension on seawater and atmosphere evolution, is largely unknown. We use the strontium isotope ratio in seawater [(87Sr/86Sr)seawater] as a proxy for chemical weathering, and we test the sensitivity of (87Sr/86Sr...

Spectral Indexing of Chemical Weathering in the Mid-infrared: New Means to Evaluate Weathering on Mars

Introduction: Spectroscopic observations offer the best means to evaluate chemical weathering on Mars at regional and global scales. Near-infrared (NIR) spectral data from OMEGA and CRISM have revealed hydrated minerals that indicate aqueous alteration, including different clay minerals [1-3], sulfates [1,4], silica [5], and carbonates [6], which are regionally localized across the Martian high...

Constraining the role of early land plants in Palaeozoic weathering and global cooling

How the colonization of terrestrial environments by early land plants over 400 Ma influenced rock weathering, the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and phosphorus, and climate in the Palaeozoic is uncertain. Here we show experimentally that mineral weathering by liverworts—an extant lineage of early land plants—partnering arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, like those in 410 Ma-old early land pla...

Continental crust generated in oceanic arcs

Thin oceanic crust is formed by decompression melting of the upper mantle at mid-ocean ridges, but the origin of the thick and buoyant continental crust is enigmatic. Juvenile continental crust may form from magmas erupted above intraoceanic subduction zones, where oceanic lithosphere subducts beneath other oceanic lithosphere. However, it is unclear why the subduction of dominantly basaltic oc...
